stamp lickin' good?

It's Christmas card sending time again! I bought some Christmas cards when I visited Toronto last October, and again some here in Stirling last month. I have been waiting for the time when I can go and post them. Today, Saturday, was a good time as this will be my last Saturday here. I go back to Thailand next Saturday. And the PO at the city centre is open on Saturdays until 1730 hrs. So there I was, with my 15 cards for the Philippines, and 2 cards for the UK. The PO staff gave me stamps for the international cards, and he put sticker stamps on the local cards. So I went to the side table where customers would usually prepare their stuff before sending them. I needed paste or glue or moist pad to moisten the stamps so they would stick. I could not find any, so I asked the staff. Can you believe what he told me I should do? He made sign language that I should lick the stamps to moisten them. What the ... ? Was he serious? In this day and age? I told him that is not allowed, it is not so hygienic? But he said they do not have this kind of thing coz they would just lick the stamps. I had 15 stamps and I would not do it! As I had an appointment with a friend in 10 minutes, I had to leave. Anyway I would just come back later then coz I still had other cards to post. I just considered it as another one of those strange or backward things that happen in this town.

In the afternoon I returned to the PO with the cards. I of course used moist tissue to stick the stamps on. And then I had another card that needed a stamp. And can you believe it? He did the sticking for me, by licking the stamp and putting it on the envelop! Yucky!!!! I will not tell whose card it is ... I just hope nothing will grow on the stamp while the card is making its way to the Philippines!

Then this PO guy asked me if I were from the Philippines, and whether I am from the north or south. I answered that I am from the central part. Coz he is married to a Filipina from the north! Strange? Small world? I just hope he did not get that habit of stamp licking from his wife...

Christmas ... It's the most wonderful time of the year! (charity cards from tesco)

Christmas greetings!

And it came to pass ... the time has come ... the most awaited time ... now is the time ...

So it is Christmas eve. The 24th! Just a quiet day here, unlike in the Philippines when I am sure that there are so many things going on. In homes, people are busy cooking and preparing for the noche buena and family parties. In shops, people are busy buying last minute items to give as gifts. Elsewhere, people are busy wrapping gifts, chatting with family and friends who are visiting, running around with errands left and right. Whether busy or not, let us not forget the reason for having a Christmas celebration.

Sharing a paragraph about Christmas and the reason for the season and all the celebration. I think this is very appropriate and true ... Read on:

Greatest man in history named Jesus, had no servants, yet they called him Master. Had no degree, yet they called him Teacher. Had no medicines, yet they called him Healer. He had no army, yet kings feared Him. He won no military battles, yet he conquered the world. He committed no crime, yet they crucified Him. He was ...buried in a tomb, yet He lives today.

I believe Jesus is the reason for the season.

Wishing you all a meaningful Christmas celebration, that His peace which the world can not give will be yours today and in the new year. May Christmas be felt in your hearts especially thanking Jesus for coming to save us and give us peace and joy so we can face another year with faith and courage.

siampinoy party

5th Dec. It was my first Christmas Party for this year. The siampinoy.net group had a party yesterday at Master J and Madame H's new place in Ramkhamhaeng. It was quite well-attended, and I enjoyed meeting new friends. They are new face to face but they seemed like old friends coz I have been communicating with them through siampinoy.net. There were lots of food (of course, it's a Pinoy party, and also a Christmas party!), music, fun, and gifts. Plus photo opportunities in a real studio, with Master J's skillful handling of the camera.

Also took many photos of the event to post here, and so I can match faces with their net IDs in the forum. It was a surprise to finally meet the faces behind names such as Master J, Madame H, Ongbak, Mr. Fit, softrock, Reign Butterfly, Buddhist Punk, Boroyski, Elektra, Dimples, Off, Metallic_Cotton, smb...

Food. We started with pancit molo. Missed this stuff. It had everything in it - chicken, pork, shrimp. So yummy! We joked that it's great to have pancit molo even if we are not in Molo, Iloilo City. The main cook is from Iloilo so it was the real thing! Then there were other main dishes - lechon, arroz valenciana, pancit canton, fried chicken, chicken sarsiado (don't really know the exact name), fried shrimps, baked pasta. And the desserts - biko, palitaw, orange cake, carrot cake.

Fun. There were a number of games and we had fun competing! Games about Thai trivia, charade, trip to Jerusalem (for those with young knees!), and gift hunt. For our Thai friends, there was a game about Pinoy trivia. Special participation by friends from Aviation (Thailand) Co. who gave out some prizes to those who responded to trivia Q's about Cebu Pacific.

Exchange gifts. Always have this during Christmas parties. Great fun.

and more ...

Friends. It was great to have this opportunity to meet new friends, especially meeting our kababayans here in the Land of Smiles so we do not feel we are in the Land of the Lost. It's great to have siampinoy.net as part of the Pinoy community here and hope many more will be able to connect, interact and find it useful and helpful. It is a valuable resource center for anything related to Pinoys in Thailand as well as for Thai-Fil relations and the like.

time really flies when ...

So it has been said and heard ... time flies when ... what do you think comes next? The most popular one is ... when you're having fun. In our case, I would say ... when you have lots of things to do and there is not enough time to do it!!!!! Of course, I love what I am doing now so I can say I am having fun as well. So they are related. This came to mind today when I looked at the date. I am always watching the calendar these days because of planning for our intensive project work, as well as for my upcoming travels to Philippines and elsewhere in the coming months.

Soon and very soon I will meet loved ones and dear friends again. Even for just a short while. I am sure I will be meeting some new ones, as I am planning to attend the PEBA event. Too bad that I have to leave the same night of the UPFish Reunion at UP Diliman.

November is ending, and tomorrow another month starts. It is not just any month though. It is December, already! The 12th month. Last month of the year. 2010. Then after 31 days it will be another year. A new year. 2011. It just seems like yesterday when it was the beginning of 2010. And now it is nearly ending. So time really flies...when you have lots of work to do...so many things to finish...and when you are having fun doing them, and so much more along the side.

Celebrating Christmas ... then the new year ... reflections, reflections. Thanksgiving. Giving glory. Worshiping God. Praising Him. Committing everything to Him, for He knows what is best for us. For in Him we live, and have our being. Thank You, Lord for all things that have passed, and for what is in store for us in the future. There is no fear because we know you hold the future.

Even though time flies so fast, we can be still, and know that you are God. And You can make all things beautiful in Your time. So we live, and experience that life is indeed beautiful because You make it so.

So looking forward to Christmas!

Yes....can feel it already...in my heart, in my mind. Not yet all over where I am now. But in a few weeks' time I will be in the Philippines so I am sure I can see all the signs of Christmas celebration over there. Philippines is well-known to start Christmas celebration as early as September, you know, when the -ber months come. That's when in the past the cool wind would start to blow and we could feel that the weather has changed. Along with the cool season comes a nostalgic feeling of past Christmases, and hoping that the current year will be the same or even more joyful! From Christmas carols being heard in the malls and jeepneys and elsewhere, to decorations, shows, shopping, and other events ... at school, church, offices, communities. There is a feeling of Christmas that can never be felt elsewhere. So it is good to be in the Philippines at Christmas time. But if one can't be there, let us try to build our own Christmas memories where we are. Because Christmas can be celebrated no matter where one is...in fact the first Christmas occurred in a manger, in a stable, among the animals.

Even in the web such as blogs, Christmas postings are now increasing. Such as this one at Pinoylandia, where Noypi the author wishes everyone a bountiful and meaningful Christmas. See his card below and follow his link. Thanks.

01 September 2010

The -ber months have started

1st September. Today. Messages about Christmas start to flood my wall in FB. I start to have that nostalgic feeling that Christmas brings to one who is away from home. Nostalgic because of not being with family/loved ones in the Philippines; because of not being in the Philippines at Christmas time. There's really nothing like it. You can feel it, hear it, see it, live it.

What is 'it'? It's the spirit of Christmas, of celebration, of expectation. I just hope that it is the celebration of the coming of our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ into this world as part of His plan for salvation. That it is an expectation of His second coming, which He promised before ascending to heaven. And His promises never fail.

At the same time, it is also a celebration of love. Because of love. Because He loved us first. Because He loves us with an everlasting love. So we have learned to love and be loved. It is a celebration with loved ones, near and far. For those abroad, going home at Christmas is one of the highlights of our lives. Months of preparation for some. But for others it could also be a spur of the moment decision, though the consequence would be a more expensive air fare and an unacceptable schedule. But no matter, if one really has to go home.

For those who can't go home, well we can show love to those around us. There are so many people needing love and kindness. We just need to look around. And if they ask why, we can share to them about Christmas, about love ... the language of Jesus.

Listening and especially singing along with Christmas songs, alone or with friends, surely can give us that great feeling of celebration. I would often do this, much better now with youtube and other media. But sometimes we could get sentimental while singing them, as memories of former Christmases flood our thoughts and hearts, recalling that wonderful feeling with loved ones as we celebrated Christmas many, many years ago. It's when the feeling of homesickness is also strong. Pulling at our heartstrings, and we could not do anything at first but to cry, and let it out. But a sort of peace comes after the release of tears...and we can be strong again, knowing that God has been faithful in taking care of us, and of our loved ones.

So this year, let us celebrate Christmas, with expectation of great things to come, and with open hearts to show love to everyone. Because the message of Christmas is hope, and love.

The youtube vdo below is an old one but it fully reflects what is in our minds and our hearts during Christmas...

Looking back, stepping forward

Reflections are the norm when something ends and a new one starts. Such as the end of the year and the beginning of a new one. There was hardly any time to do such during the last few days of 2009. But I still tried, albeit mentally without writing it down, yet. The main reason was that where I am, there were only 2 official holidays, on 31st Dec and 1st Jan. Since the 2nd & 3rd Jan fell on a weekend, the break seemed longer. But this was nothing compared to those whose holiday break started long before Christmas. This was not so for us here. Even during Christmas eve we were still somewhere out there in the field, under the heat of the sun, conducting a pre-survey of field trip sites for our January workshop. Christmas day was spent in the office, with the usual workload. And so on. And yet, being reflective can be an attitude of the mind and heart. One can be busy and yet reflective. The mind doesn't stop thinking deep thoughts whilst doing something else.

As we talked about what we thought of 2009 and what 2010 holds for us, we could not help acknowledging the sovereignty of our Lord at all times. His care, comfort, provision and guidance are just a few things to thank Him for. We experienced successes and joys, as well as sadness, grief and disappointments in 2009. Some more than others. And yet as we enter 2010, we know that in allowing us to face these things in 2009, God has taught us a lot. He has taught us to be more: patient, sensitive to His leading, forgiving, prayerful, seeking of His presence, open to others, helpful, understanding, and to show more love , kindness and appreciation. To be more thankful each day. To be busy with His affairs more than the world's.

In terms of slowing down, yes, we also need that, in as much as we need to spend more quality time with each other as well as with other people: our loved ones, friends, and others whom God will lead us to meet.

Though we still feel the impacts of 2009, we can step forward and forge ahead in 2010 knowing that we are not alone. We hang on to God's promises at all times. Basic they may be, or too simplistic as others would say, but we would rather be simple and joyful, than complex and sophisticated but not rich towards heaven.

Let's face the new year with courage and determination to make a difference.

Global Cafe

I haven't been faithful in blogging lately due to my study/workload. What with papers to read, analyse and critique, and presentations to prepare, along with meetings and seminars to attend, plus cooking and housework...Anyhow, I finally found the time, now.

Every Thursday, the Global Cafe is open from 430 pm until 7 pm or so. This is for students to drop by and have a chat and a hot drink and snack, and to get to know people and make friends. I have been coming although not so regularly due to my academic commitments. But I still try to go whenever I can despite the distance as the venue is quite a walk from my study room in another building, and I had to brave the cold (and sometimes the rain). It's just something that I want to go to where I can meet friends and talk about other things. And I get to meet nice people especially the organizers who are friendly and genuinely interested in us.

Today we had the Christmas Global Cafe. The last meeting for this year before students go for Christmas break. I had been looking forward to this, along with last Tuesday's Christmas Carol Service, which was also a good one, simple yet profound.

A good number of students came - some I've met before, while some were new to me, just as I was to them. But all of us have been coming to the GC during the semester.

We had some special Scottish food such as haggis, oat cakes, shortbread and pudding with cream, together with chocolates, peanuts, biscuits, and hot and cold drinks.

We also had Christmas crackers with goodies (marbles, key chain, mini-notepads, and small items), coloured paper crowns and jokes inside.

Aside from the talking and eating, there was also a sharing of what Christmas means by Ken, who came wearing his Scottish formal wear, the kilt.

Thanks to Joan (& Ken), Carol & Christine for organizing this. See you again next year!

Merry/Happy Christmas! May we all experience the peace, joy & love that Christmas brings, which come from our loving Saviour!

LP44: Tsokolate (Chocolate)

One of the gifts I received last Christmas is a skin care set made from chocolate. But I have not used it yet. It really smells like chocolate and candy. I have yet to ask a Korean friend to translate the things written on the label before I use it. I remember the book, The Chocolate Lovers' Club, where the members went to a chocolate spa. It must be deliciously nice to be pampered there. There is one at Hershey Hotel. There's more on chocolates at Litratong Pinoy.

I love Christmas!

Merry Christmas to all!

I love Christmas because it gives me a perspective of what love really is. Christmas eve last night Key & I spent singing Christmas and praise songs, reading Luke 2:1-20, meditating on it and praying & thanking God for His gift and His many blessings. Earlier at lunch time we had an end-of-the-year party by the lake with my officemates. Each one brought a dish or two so we had an international menu (Filipino, Thai, Bangladeshi, Nepali, Indian, Vietnamese, western, fusion). We had an exchange of gifts and also carol singing. It was good fun and we enjoyed the camaraderie as it is not often that we can get together in this informal way. By 2 pm it was back-to-office time. When evening time came, in the midst of cooking spaghetti (for a 10pm get-together party that never materialized) I remembered that I still have not called home. I was planning to call earlier but I got busy with cooking. I know my parents would be waiting and would be disappointed and sad if nobody called. So I called and had to try many times. The networks were busy, as usual. This is always the case calling the Philippines at Christmas time and new year! Finally I was able to get through and talked to my parents to greet them and give some encouragement.

I have found the internet to be very useful especially when I want to listen to Christmas songs. So for many days now I have been listening to them through imeem.com or watching them through youtube. I had a post on Christmas songs last November here which I go back to as well. Below is really very good! Thanks to Pinay Ads for the link. Happy viewing and listening!

Into it!

We are finally into it ... the Christmas activities ... we have done our shopping for gifts (almost 90%), posted most of the cards & other gifts, set-up the Christmas tree at home, started distributing the gifts, baked Christmas fruitcake for giving away ... hmmm ... are these all about Christmas? I hope not. There is more to this and we know it! Glad to read Scriptures these days that talk about Christmas, the reason for it, and why we are celebrating it. So let's not forget that and it helps also to listen to Christmas songs that talk about this. The Handel's Messiah is a very good one to listen to. I missed attending the concert this year. But I have the music here so I can listen anytime. Today's devotional is about it as well.

Another treasure I have here is the CD from Our Daily Bread which I received last year entitled, Christmas Meditation. I listen to it often now and it helps me to re-focus my thoughts and heart on the real meaning of Christmas. Also I try to share to those whom I am giving gifts and cards so that they too will think about it or will come to know.

The only thing for sure in celebrating Christmas this year is that I am away from my family. It's kind of lonely and I just have to remember to call home when they are still awake. It will only be my parents and my sister and her family (they live next door) to celebrate at home. But I guess it will not be like before when after dinner on the 24th we would have our program-program when everyone would present his/her talent, and my parents would say some encouraging words. When the grandchildren came and they visited it was their turn to do the talent show, and we aunts and uncles would give cash prizes to them. Then we would wait for midnight to strike for the Noche Buena. When we were already grown ups each one of us had his/her own menu to cook. Those were the days. I wonder when we can all be together again for Christmas. We just treasure these memories in our hearts. Am sure my Dad & Mom would shed a tear or two again this year.

I am grateful because ...

I got a tag from Rechie today asking what I am grateful for. Thank you so much Rechie for sharing this to me. There are lots of things that I am very much grateful for in this life.

1. God loves me with an everlasting love and has given me eternal life in Jesus.
2. I have a husband who loves God (and me, of course). An answered prayer.
3. I continue to experience the goodness of the Lord in my life, work, with my family and friends.
4. Each day is a gift from the Lord and His word reminds me to keep going and looking up, and to look at life through the eyes of Christ. Whether times are good or rough.
5. Christmas is coming and this will be another opportunity to share Christ with others.

Let me know what are the things you are grateful for. I am sharing this tag with the following: ultrapink, ztirfmanic, simplykane, lärarinna and linapuhan@starbucks.

How This Works:
1. Re-post the picture on your blog and pls. acknowledge where it came from. Kindly leave a comment on this post so I would know you've posted it.
2. Write down 5 things you are grateful for and the 5 bloggers you are tagging.
3. You may copy this or write your own quote regarding gratitude:
"The Lord is faithful to all His promises and loving toward all He has made." - Psalm 145:13b

Christmas is near!

In less than one month we will be celebrating Christmas. During this time with the cooler temperature and the soft breeze I can already feel it. It would be much better if I were in the Philippines now with all the visible and audible signs of Christmas. You can really feel it despite the gloom from the economic and political situation there. But Christmas goes beyond the here and now, anyway. Here in Thailand you can only see decorations in the malls and big establishments, but of course they are mostly Christmas trees, Santa Claus and Rudolph, snow scenes, all the tinsels and glitters. I saw some angels and stars in the decorations. But nothing on the first family, we call it "belen" at home. I know that at least in churches and in Christian homes there will be a nativity scene (I hope). So that the worshippers and attendees will not forget what Christmas is all about.

The thought of Christmas and the excitement that goes with it are helping me go through some discouraging and hopeless moments at work as well as in other areas of living here in prathet Thai. Like today when we went again to the Lifestyles Pacific office. Again another unpleasant experience. They simply lack customer service skills ... that is the last time I will go there. Anyway now that I have another health product (First Vita Plus) to use I can say goodbye to Intra health juice.
